For a typography seminar two fellow students and I developed an interactive timeline to visualize the development of the western alphabet from Egyptian hieroglyphs to Roman letters.
This flash application compares different letters and their changes over time. While the shapes of the letters are morphing, the geographical movement is shown on the map in the background. After each step of development, the animation stops and additional information about the development is displayed.
The user can move back and forth in time by the arrows on the left and the right. In addition, the user can pick any letter from the upper left corner to be displayed larger in the middle at any point of the animation.
