The Brief
Improving Skype’s “Business Control Panel”, a web application that allows businesses to manage Skype’s services for the whole company in one place.
With the Business market growing in strategic importance, a ground-up redesign should create a solid base for distributing Skype’s Business proposition, with a flexible design framework that could cope with future growth and additions.
The redesigned and rebranded application was launched in May 2010 as Skype’s central business product.
I led the design process for the whole project from discovery and scoping through design and development through to QA and launch.
Discovery Phase
Working closely with the product, sales and user research team, the discovery phase was aimed at gaining a deep understanding of the current system, to uncover user needs and business requirements and to agree on a common vision and scope for the project.
Design Phase
During the design phase I developed the new structure and interaction design for the application. I worked closely with the research team to verify early design concepts as well as more refined designs in several rounds of user testing.
I also worked with a team of visual designers who developed the visual design framework and screen designs.
Implementation Phase
During the build phase, I made sure designs were implemented correctly and resolved design problems that came out during development. I also supported the creation of marketing and training material for launch.
